Obverse

Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Obverse description : Tête à gauche ; avec une oreille ; chevelure faite de deux rangées de boucles en esses encadrant une torsade nattée et se terminant à l’arrière le long du cou ; une bulle devant le cou.

Reverse

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Reverse description : Croix formée de quatre cantons ; quatre feuilles au 1er canton, grenade entrouverte au 2nd, un cercle à bordure interne flammée avec un point en son centre, flammé aussi au 3e et une hache à droite au manche perlé au 4e canton.

Commentary

Si cette drachme s’insère parfaitement dans la série I dite “à la bulle”, le revers est très particulier avec une inversion des deux premiers cantons et aussi des 3e et 4e cantons. Cette drachme est la monnaie type de la variété 2, avec hache au 4e canton.
C’est comme si le graveur du coin de revers n’avait pas pensé qu’il gravait les motifs du revers en négatif ; le coin de revers qui a servi à frapper cette drachme offrirait le même dessin (mais en creux) que les drachmes (en reliefs) de la variété 1 !
G. Savès n’indique cette monnaie que très rare alors que c’est pourtant le seul exemplaire recensé (?).
If this drachma fits perfectly into the so-called “bubble” series I, the reverse is very particular with an inversion of the first two cantons and also of the 3rd and 4th cantons. This drachma is the type coin of variety 2, with an ax in the 4th canton. It is as if the engraver of the reverse die had not thought that he was engraving the motifs on the reverse in negative; the reverse die which was used to strike this drachma would offer the same design (but in hollow) as the drachmas (in relief) of variety 1! G. Savès only indicates this coin as very rare even though it is the only example recorded (?)
